Of all Himalayan countries, Bhutan is the most alluring. The Bhutanese government is reserved about allowing visitors into the country. Bhutan is opening up for independent travel, but the government does not encourage it. It is generally only possible to visit Bhutan as a tourist or as a guest of the government.

Bhutan is also a great destination for trekking through beautiful sacred mountains, lush green valleys, remote temples, and historical monasteries. Between China and India at the eastern end of the Himalayan chain, it is the most distant, the least modernised, and the least affected by violent political conflict - apart from Assamese insurgents taking refuge inside the southern border.
